Tet, the Vietnamese New Year starts according to the Lunar Calendar. Despite its impressive credential, the Gregorian Calendar hasn't generally been accepted in Vietnam, particular in rural areas. Vietnamese people may treat the Western Calendar with respect, but reserve their heart and souls for traditional Tet. For all Vietnamese, Tet is extremely important and sacred. During the Tet, all behavior and activities should be pure and beautiful, as it may well be an omen for what occurs in the New Year. It's a time for people to stay at home with families renewing old bonds and wishing each other prosperity and happiness for the coming year. Family values are high priority for the Vietnamese, contributing to the development of one's character. Thus, as a general rule, all family members try to spend their holiday together under the roof. |
